Today our daily herbal discourse is on dandelion root extract and its ability to cause human cancer cells to die along with a multitude of other benefits.
The following two peer reviewed cited scientific research articles indicate that Dandelion Root Extract (DRE) causes death in human leukemia cells.
“Dandelion extracts have been used in traditional Native American Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for treatment of leukemia and breast cancer; however, the mechanism of action remains unknown. Today, DRE is mainly marketed for management of gastrointestinal and liver disorders. The current study aims to determine the anti-cancer activity of dandelion root extract (DRE) against human leukemia, and to evaluate the specificity and mechanism of DRE-induced apoptosis.”
“Aqueous DRE effectively induces apoptosis in human leukemia cell lines in a dose and time dependent manner. Very early activation of caspase-8 and the subsequent activation of caspase-3 indicate that DRE may be inducing extrinsic or receptor-mediated apoptosis.”
“Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML) is a heterogeneous disease that is not only hard to diagnose and classify, but is also highly resistant to treatment. Available forms of therapy for this disease have not shown significant effects and patients rapidly develop resistance early on in therapy.”
“The results from this study indicate that Dandelion Root Extract (DRE) is able to efficiently and selectively induce apoptosis and autophagy in these cell lines in a dose and time dependent manner, with no significant toxicity on non-cancerous peripheral blood mononuclear cells.”
Dandelion is also a diuretic, anti-inflammatory, mild choleretic, detoxifying herb used for a wide variety of ailments such as eczema and other skin issues, cleansing the liver and gallbladder, increasing the flow of mother’s milk (galactagogue), breast and prostate cancer and increasing lymphocytes (white blood cells responsible for immune responses).
Dandelion is a member of the Asteraceae/Compositae family closely related to chicory. It is a perennial herb native to the Northern hemisphere and found growing wild in meadows, pastures, and waste grounds of temperate zones.
Dandelion leaves are full of vitamins A, C, D, and B complex as well as iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium, manganese, copper, choline, calcium, boron, and silicon. The most active constituents in dandelion appear to be eudesmanolide and germacranolide, substances unique to this herb. Other ingredients include taraxol, taraxerol, and taraxasterol, along with stigmasterol, beta-sitosterol, caffeic acid, and p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid.
